FEBRUARY CHAMBER MEETING, TUESDAY, FEB. 7, 2023, 6 PM, EL CAPITAN STEAK HOUSE.
The Big Flag is—very, very, very big, measuring 60 by 30 feet. It is always the last entry in the annual Armed Forces Day (AFD) parade. Dignitaries, AFD volunteers and parade attendees help carry the flag down Main St. to Veteran’s Park. The Big Flag was the brain child of long-time MC resident Dave Ferguson. Its inaugural raising at Veteran’s Park occurred during AFD 2005.
“Cecil the Sea Serpent” was inspired by the legend of the mysterious “Taogwa,” the Walker Lake serpent legend of the Walker River Paiute Tribe on the North shore of Walker Lake. In 1964, Naval Ammunition Depot (NAD) Captain W. W. Schweer and his wife initiated plans for a replica ceremony, thus Cecil was born. The sea serpent continues to be Mineral County’s Ambassador to the world.
